Day 9 Reaction

I went grocery shopping today! Man, it’s going to feel good to not just eat leftovers. I got food for about 2 breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes each. It’s pretty expensive to eat paleo and if I decide to keep doing it I’ll definitely need to budget it better.

Day 9 Ratings:

Energy:  6/10 (1 being dead tired; 10 being off the walls energetic)

  • I was a bit tired waking up this morning and then around 7pm I hit another wall. I think a lot of this has to do with how busy I’ve been with the holidays. I hope to get back to a regular-ish schedule here in the next couple of days.

Mood: 7/10 (1 being very sad; 10 being overjoyed)

  • No changes in mood; I think I’ll just take this rating out. I expected more of an effect on my mood from the diet.

Quality of Workout: 6.5/10 (1 being a horrible workout; 10 being a fantastic workout)

  • It was a hard workout, that’s for sure. I was just really disappointed in how many reps I got for the squat clean and jerks. I didn’t push myself mentally enough because I definitely was physically capable of doing more. The burpees box jumps I’m happy with- I set a goal for 50 and got exactly that. I was able to push myself through the last 20 second sprint to reach that goal.

Hunger: 9/10 (1 being starving throughout day; 10 being fully satiated)

  • I was hardly hungry at all today, it was weird. I think it had to do with not wanting to eat leftovers again and wanting to try something new.

I’m pretty happy with how today went. My weight is beginning to regulate itself and I still feel good about eating paleo (other than being a little tired).

Day 9 Crossfit Workout

I’m skipping a breakfast post because I’ve just been eating eggs with vegetables and fruit for breakfast since I haven’t gone to the store this week.

Weight: 160#; I think my weight is finally starting to regulate itself now that it’s more used to the diet.

Sleep: 8.5 hours; pretty good sleep, woke up once but feel right back asleep.

2011 Open WOD 11.3

Perform as many reps of SQUAT Clean & Jerk as possible in 5 minutes (135# is what weight I did)
* The squat clean counts as 1 rep AND the overhead also counts as 1 rep so each full movement is worth TWO REPS for this one.

Total reps: 36

Rest 2 mins

Perform as many Burpee Box Jump Overs (24″) as possible in 5 minutes

Total reps: 50

This workout was pretty simple just really fatiguing. I wish I would’ve been able to get more reps for the squat clean and jerk but the squat cleans really took a toll on me. I was able to go at a decent pace for the box jumps so that I could make a final sprint during the last 20ish seconds. Overall a pretty good workout.

Day 7 Crossfit Workout

Today was open gym so I just worked on overhead squat.

New PR: 170lbs

It was pretty easy and I definitely could’ve done more but I stopped because it was taking too much time. I’ve said it before, but the recovery after workouts I’ve had since starting paleo has been amazing. I’m basically never sore; if anything I may be a little tight in certain areas but nothing inhibiting. That’s definitely the biggest difference I’ve noticed with paleo. I’ve done crossfit 4 days in a row now and still feel fresh enough to do a workout tomorrow (although I won’t).

Day 7 Morning

Weight: 159.5#; still losing weight. I think I will increase the amount I eat for snacks to try to counter this. If I can stay at around 160# I’ll be okay with that.

Sleep: 9 hours; really good sleep. I feel asleep right away and since I didn’t have an alarm to wake up to I just slept until I woke up.

  • 3 scrambled eggs with onions, green peppers, salsa
  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 5 strawberries

Not the most filling breakfast, but it was quick and simple to make.

Day 6 Summary/Reaction

Man, it’s been a busy couple days. I haven’t been at my laptop at all so it’s made it hard to post anything.

In the morning I wasn’t at my house so I couldn’t weight myself. I got around 8.5 hours of quality sleep.

For breakfast I made almond banana pancakes ( They were really good and really filling. They tasted a lot like banana bread (yum). I think I will try to make them again but mix the ingredients in a blender so it’s more of a batter and use a better pan to cook them, they were hard to flip.

For lunch my cousins and I went to a “make your own stir fry” place. It was hard to find paleo sauces for the stir fry there so I ended up making a lemon juice, lime juice, sherry, and garlic mixture. It was alright, but teriyaki definitely would’ve been better.

It was a pretty simple dinner of just steak, broccoli, and an orange.

It’s been a weird couple of days diet-wise for me since I haven’t been at home. I’ve had to kind of make things up as I go to keep eating paleo and I’m sure it’s going to stay this way the next couple of days (Christmas Eve and Christmas). I really like how I’ve felt on the diet so far though so I don’t plan on cheating on both Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Day 6 Ratings:

Energy:  7/10 (1 being dead tired; 10 being off the walls energetic)

  • I had steady energy throughout the day. Even though it was a really busy day I didn’t feel as if I had to drag through it at all. I’m a little tired as I write this but that’s normal.

Mood: 7/10 (1 being very sad; 10 being overjoyed)

  • Still no changes in mood. I have found myself getting annoyed at other people commenting on how I’m eating. It doesn’t really make sense to me, because it doesn’t effect them and it’s a great way to eat. Oh well.

Quality of Workout: 7/10 (1 being a horrible workout; 10 being a fantastic workout)

  • This one is hard for me to rate. I feel like it should be a higher rating because I felt great through the whole workout, but at the same time I wonder if that’s because I didn’t push myself as hard as I should’ve. It’s really hard to pace yourself on long workouts like this.

Hunger: 8/10 (1 being starving throughout day; 10 being fully satiated)

  • Overall I didn’t feel much hunger today. I ate a lot at the restaurant for lunch so that definitely helped tide me over for dinner. The pancakes were really filling and kept me satisfied throughout my workout.

So far I really like eating paleo. I’ve felt great and just feel healthier overall. That’s why I’m not sure I want to cheat tomorrow and on Christmas. Since I probably won’t be posting tomorrow night at all (I’ll still post breakfast and a workout I think) I’ll try to do a week long reaction to my first week Christmas night.

Day 6 Crossfit Workout

Hum the 12 Days Of Christmas while performing the WOD for today…
1 Wall Walk (Try to go nose to wall & walk back out under control)
2 Power Snatches (95#)
3 Strict Chin Ups
4 Barbell Squats (Front OR Back)(95#)
5 Burpee Barbell Double Jumps (Burpee then jump over your bar & back before the next Burpee)
6 Barbell Push Presses (95#)
7 AbMat Sit Ups
8 Hang Power Cleans (95#)
9EA Jumping Lunges (Switch in the air & just a slight jump off the ground)
10 Sumo Deadlift High Pulls (95#)
11 Toes 2 Bar
12 Calorie Sprint on the Rower

You will start round 1 with just 1 Wall Walk, then round 2 will be 2 Power Snatches & 1 Wall Walk, then round 3 will be 3 Strict Chin Ups, 2 Power Snatches & 1 Wall Walk… Keep moving down the list of movements, adding one new movement at a time until you get all the way to the row sprint at the end…

There was a 30 minute time cap and the only person to finish in the 30 minutes (out of probably 30 people) was my cousin.

I finished 10 day and got through 4 push presses on the 11th day. I felt great throughout the workout but I paced myself too slowly. I could’ve easily finished the workout (not in the 30 minutes) had I kept going past the time cap, so I know I had plenty of energy to finish with. It was both encouraging and discouraging because I didn’t feel as if I pushed hard enough. Recovery was quick again after.

Day 5 Evening

I had plenty of energy throughout the day today. There was no real hunger throughout the day either; I wasn’t able to eat from 3p-8p but my lunch was filling enough that I didn’t experience hunger.

For dinner I made:

It was a really good dinner, tasted basically like a taco. It was really quick and easy to make too, and I’ll have leftovers for tomorrow. The Christmas baking has begun in our house and it definitely makes it hard because everything smells so good. These next couple of days will be interesting.

Day 5 Crossfit Workout

2011 Open WOD 11.2

Complete as many rounds plus extra reps as possible in 15 minutes of:
9 Deadlifts (155#)
12 Hand Release Push Ups
15 Box Jumps (24″)

Result: 7 rounds + 9 Deadlifts in 8th round

I felt plenty strong at the beginning of this workout and the fatigue throughout wasn’t anything unusual. I think I could’ve done better had I not been out so late last night- I’m still catching up on my energy because of this. Compared to other people’s scores I did pretty well, most were right around 6 rounds with some doing better. I think I mentioned it yesterday but my recovery time feels a lot faster since I’ve started paleo. It used to be that after a hard WOD like this I would be in pain and feel basically like crap for 10-15 minutes after, but today it was a couple minutes and I was good to go. I’ve also noticed that I haven’t been as sore as normal the days after hard workouts. I thought yesterday’s workout would’ve really made my hip flexors and shoulders sore but they really weren’t bad and after a little warming up I couldn’t even tell I had worked out yesterday.
